AHPI SECRETARIAT

AHPI represent vast majority of healthcare providers in India. It works as 'not for profit' organization. AHPI is registered as SOCIETY under society registration act of 1860, vide registration number S/186/2012 dated 21st December 2012. The membership is open to all the healthcare providers such ashospitals/nursing homes/clinics, diagnostic centres, medical equipment companies, insurance providers and all others that are accountable to the community and who believe in the aims and objectives of the AHPI. All members on the roster of AHPI constitute the General Body of AHPI. The affairs of AHPI are managed by the Executive Committee (Governing Body) with total membership not exceeding twenty as per Rules & Regulations of AHPI. The Executive Committee among others have President and Member Secretary. The member secretary acts as Chief Executive of the secretariat and is designated as Director General, who is vested with executive powers to administer the secretariat as provided in the Rules and Regulations of the AHPI.

Dr. Alexander Thomas

Dr. Alexander Thomas, Founder-Member and President of the Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI), Founder-Member and President of the Association of National Board Accredited Institutions (ANBAI), Founder-President (2012-2017) and Patron of the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO),Former Director (CEO) of Bangalore Baptist Hospital (BBH), has served the healthcare sector for over 30 years. He has extensive experience working with mission hospitals (the second-largest healthcare provider after the Government), the private sector and the Government (both Centre and State).

Some of his positions are listed below, He is or has been:- Member of the Working Group on Public Private Partnership (PPP) for Non-Communicable Diseases in District Hospitals, NITI Aayog, Govt. of India; Member-Secretary, Task Force on Karnataka Public Health Policy, Karnataka Jnana Aayoga, Govt. of Karnataka; Board Member, NABH; Member, Expert Committee for Amendment, Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act 2007, Govt, of Karnataka; Advisor to the UNESCO-NBE Steering Committee in the PG Medical Education Curriculum; Consultant, World Bank; State Chairman, HSSC; Chairman, Regional Working Group on Ethics in Healthcare, CII, On the board of various Healthcare organizations including CMC, Vellore; Chairperson, Committee on SDGs to Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being, Govt. of Karnataka; and Member of the four-person committee set up by the Union Health Ministry to review the cost of medical training. Dr. Thomas has initiated the setting up of the country's first Think Tank on Health at NLSIU Bangalore. He led a collaboration with ISRO to incorporate ISRO safety practices in the health sector.

Dr. Thomas's The Handbook of Healthcare Quality & Patient Safety (2017), and Communicate. Care. Cure: A Guide to Healthcare Communication (2014), are both milestones for the healthcare sector. The latter has mushroomed into an impactful healthcare communication movement in the country, with training workshops and an e-learning course, endorsed by NBE and NABH.

Dr. Thomas was awarded the Emeritus Teacher Award by the National Board of Examination (2018), was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by CAHO (2018), was recognized as an Icon of Quality and Patient Safety in Healthcare by the Society for Emergency Medicine in India (2017), received the Distinguished Service Award by the IMA (2016), and was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Christian Medical College, Vellore, for 25 years of service (2013)

    The Director General

    Dr. Girdhar J. Gyani is founder Director General of newly constituted "Association of Healthcare Providers (India)". Prior to this he was Secretary General, Quality Council of India during 2003-2012, an apex national body responsible for establishing and operating national accreditation structure and promoting quality in all walks of life. Dr. Gyani has distinction of serving as elected director on board of International Accreditation Forum (IAF) for 6-years (2004-10).During this period he worked extensively on improving effectiveness of QMS certification process through actual field validation, findings of which have appeared in prominent international quality journals. He successfully promoted applicationof third party conformity assessment structure to improve regulatory quality and in turn effectiveness in governance with the motto; "Quality for National Well Being".

    Responding to question in Parliament on Medical Tourism, in year 2005,Dr. Gyani pioneered formulation and operating of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), for the first time in the country. He facilitated development of accreditation standard duly approved by International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua),with the result that hospitals accredited by NABH have global recognition and which have given boost to Medical Tourism in the country. Dr Gyani functioned as founder CEO of NABH till he superannuated in July 2012 and has been retained as honorary member of its Governing Board.

    Dr. Gyani followed up the hospital program, with accreditation schemes for Nursing Homes, Blood Banks, Diagnostic Centres and Clinics. Dr Gyani introduced registration scheme for consulting organizations, which provide counselling and training to hospitals to comply with the NABH standards. Dr. Gyani facilitated quality professional bodies to apply statistical quality tools like 5S, Kaizen, Lean, Six sigma, Balanced Score Card and other measures to improve cost competitiveness and reduce variability in clinical and managerial processes.

    On the international front, Dr Gyani was elected as director on the Board of ISQua for year 2009-11 and re-elected foryears 2011-14. Dr. Gyani launched international wing of NABH and Philippine became the first overseas country to have adopted NABH standards. He was invited to visit Pakistan on two occasions under Aman Kin Asha, where he successfully launched NABH among the healthcare professionals in Pakistan.Followed up with this Dr Gyani was invited to Iran to sign MoU to launch NABH over there.

    Dr. Gyani is credited in pursuing various state governments to adopt NABH standards in public health, including district hospitals and primary health centers, through capacity building. This has truly boosted the quality of healthcare in government hospitals.This includes states of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Delhi, J&K, Haryana, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.

    Dr. Gyani has been nominated as member of academic council of Medical Council of India (MCI). Dr Gyani has initiated quality improvement program at Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, under which all teaching hospitals of affiliated Medical Colleges of University will implement NABH standards.

    Dr. Gyani is widely travelled, which has helped him to understand best practices in overseas countries. He has been popular speaker on Quality in healthcare at large number of the international events.

    Dr. Gyani has more than 40-years of experience in the areas of Teaching, Research and Quality Accreditation. Dr. Gyani holds a Doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in Quality. He has been conferred with 16th Lal C. Verman Award in year 2002 in recognition with distinguished contribution in the field of standardization, precision measurement & quality control. He is recipient of Rotary Centenary Award in year 2004 for Excellence in the field of Quality. SME World Magazine in its cover story of June 2012 issue has very deservingly depicted him as Quality Man of India.
